Winter in southwestern Pennsylvania does not wait for a convenient moment. When the temperature drops and your old furnace cannot keep up, or when a heating system finally quits after years of service, you need a clear plan and a company that can carry it out. Replacing a heating system is one of the larger decisions a homeowner makes, and the choices you lock in during installation affect your comfort and energy bills for the next fifteen to twenty years. At Metro Heating and Cooling, we handle heating installation in Bethel Park, PA with the goal of getting it right the first time, so your home stays warm through every cold snap the season brings.

This page walks you through how we approach a new heating installation, what equipment options fit different homes, and the technical factors that separate a good installation from an average one. If you are weighing a replacement now or simply planning ahead, the information here should help you make a confident decision.

Knowing When It Is Time to Replace Your Heating System

Most heating systems give warning signs before they fail completely. A furnace that cycles on and off more than it used to, rooms that never reach the temperature on the thermostat, rising energy bills with no change in your habits, or frequent repair calls all point toward a system near the end of its service life. A gas furnace typically lasts fifteen to twenty years, and once a unit passes that range, the cost of keeping it running often outweighs the value of a new, efficient system.

Safety is another reason to act. A cracked heat exchanger, for example, can allow combustion gases to mix with the air circulating through your home. When we inspect an aging system, we look for these conditions and tell you plainly what we find. We would rather help you plan a replacement on your schedule than respond to a breakdown in the middle of January. That said, breakdowns happen, and we offer 24 hour emergency service so you are never left without heat when you need it most.

Heating Systems We Install and How to Choose

Not every home in the area has the same needs. A century-old house in a historic neighborhood has different requirements than a newer build with modern ductwork. Part of our job is matching the right equipment to your home, your budget, and the way you use your space. The main options we install include:

  • Gas furnaces: The most common choice in our region, offering strong, reliable heat during harsh winters. Modern high-efficiency models reach AFUE ratings of 95 percent or higher, meaning nearly all the fuel they burn becomes usable heat.
  • Heat pumps: A single system that heats in winter and cools in summer by moving heat rather than burning fuel. Air-source heat pumps work well in our climate and pair nicely with a backup furnace in dual-fuel setups.
  • Dual-fuel systems: A combination of a heat pump and a gas furnace that switches between them based on outdoor temperature, giving you efficiency in mild weather and dependable heat in deep cold.
  • Boilers: Common in older homes with radiators or radiant floor heating, providing even, quiet warmth without blowing air.

During our consultation, we talk through how each option fits your situation. We consider the fuel sources already in your home, the condition of your existing ductwork, your long-term plans for the property, and how much you want to invest upfront versus save over time on operating costs. There is no single right answer for every household, and we explain the trade-offs so you can decide with full information.

Our Heating Installation Process

A good installation starts long before any equipment arrives. We begin with a thorough assessment of your home. This is where proper sizing comes in, and it matters more than many homeowners realize. A furnace that is too large short-cycles, wearing out faster and leaving uneven temperatures throughout the house. One that is too small runs constantly and still struggles on the coldest days. We perform a heat load calculation based on your home’s square footage, insulation, window area, ceiling height, and layout to determine the correct capacity measured in BTUs.

Once the equipment is selected, our installation follows a clear sequence that protects both your home and the integrity of the system:

  1. Removal and preparation: We safely disconnect and remove the old unit, then inspect the surrounding area for issues that need attention before the new system goes in.
  2. Setting the new equipment: We position and secure the furnace, heat pump, or boiler, making sure it sits level and has the clearances it needs for safe operation and future service.
  3. Connecting gas, electrical, and venting: Each connection is made to code, with careful attention to combustion air supply and proper venting of exhaust gases.
  4. Ductwork and airflow: We check and seal duct connections, because leaks in the ducts waste the heat you are paying for. Proper airflow is essential to the efficiency the manufacturer promises.
  5. Startup and testing: We fire the system, verify gas pressure, check temperature rise across the heat exchanger, confirm the thermostat communicates correctly, and make sure every safety control functions as designed.

Before we leave, we walk you through your new system, show you how to operate the thermostat, and explain the maintenance that keeps it running well. We want you to understand what you own and feel comfortable with it.

Technical Details That Affect Long-Term Performance

The specifications printed on a furnace label only tell part of the story. Real performance depends on how well the system is matched and installed. AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, tells you what percentage of fuel converts to heat, but a high-efficiency furnace installed with leaky ducts will underperform a mid-efficiency unit in a tight, well-sealed system. For heat pumps, we look at HSPF for heating efficiency and SEER2 for cooling, and we consider the balance point, the outdoor temperature at which a heat pump needs backup heat to keep up.

Airflow, static pressure, and proper refrigerant charge all influence how long your system lasts and how much it costs to run. These are the measurements a careful installer checks and a rushed one skips. At Metro Heating and Cooling, we treat these steps as part of every job rather than optional extras, because they are the difference between a system that quietly does its job for two decades and one that becomes a recurring problem.

My husband and I were so impressed by the two men who installed two furnaces and a/c units in our new condo. The condo is large, had originally been two separate units so has two of everything. We had Mitch give us an estimate a few months before we moved in, before we had even purchased the property because the existing units were around 30 years old. We moved in 8/28 and it was obvious that one half of our condo did not have a working air conditioner. When I emailed Mitch that we wanted his company to have the job he was able to schedule installation for two days later. The two young men were polite, professional and very efficient. We were originally told that they might need to return the following day to complete the job (The HOA limits construction to just 8-3:30 M-F) but everything was finished, cleaned up and all of the old pieces hauled away before 3:30. Their price was right and we couldn’t be happier that we hired Metro. The Sullivans, Bethel Park PA

Jason always arrives on time; works in an efficient manner; is courteous to me; and respects my home. I had a new HVAC system installed because Jason was honest about potential repairs and issues with my 19 year old system. The new install was performed professionally. I can count on Metro professionals for quality service. Same quality service this time.

First time using Metro for my air conditioner service. They had bought the company that originally installed my unit. Called in the morning, got a 2-6 pm estimate. Kevin call me at 2:30 that he was on his way. Showed up at 3pm, checked my unit, found the issue and made the repair. I had air conditioning by 3:45. Kevin was great. Very friendly, knowledgeable and didn't try to up sell me on parts or services that I didn't need. I will definitely be using Metro for any future issues.
